WVU open welcomes Fayette Roaring Lions
A quartet of Penn State Fayette athletes braved the weather and went to WVU shell building to participate in the WVU Open. History was made as this was the first indoor track meet in which the Roaring Lion's Track team ever competed. The track team is only in its 2nd year as the inaugural season was last spring. The team competed against teams like WVU, Frostburg, Washington and Jefferson, Pitt-Johnstown to name a few.
Jeremy Welsh (Jr., Connellsville) had a great day after a long layoff in the pole-vault event. Welsh, who last competed in 2016, first collegiate vaulter with a jump of 3.75 meters.
The Lions saw some success in the distance events with two of their all-conference cross country runners competing. Despite tripping in the 500 meters, Devin Pisarski (So. Connellsville), managed to quickly recover and finish fourth overall. He also participated in the 800 meters, where he finished sixth place overall. Nyoah Marteny (Fr., Frazier) finished 4th overall in the 5000 meters and 28th in the Mile.
Michael Elliott (So. Beth Center) competed in the 400 meters, finishing in 15th place. Elliott also competed in the long jump, finishing 12th. This was an event he had not competed in for two years, although he holds his high school record in the event. "I felt it went well, despite no practice at all in this event. I look forward to what I can do once spring rolls around," said Elliott.
"The meet was more of a workout, so I felt the guys did well. They only had limited practice, so we will build upon what we did," said Coach Joe Carei.
The team plans on running another indoor meet in February.
