A week after the Roaring Lions golf team completed their best ever team finish, sophomore Zack Rockwell made more history for the four year old program. Rockwell fired a 3-over 75 on the par-72 Penn National Founders Course to win the Penn State Mont Alto Tournament, making him the first ever Roaring Lion individual champion. The tournament held September 16 in Fayetteville, Pa, featured a field of 25 golfers from the Penn State University Athletic Conference.
Rockwell beat out Mont Alto's Chris Rhein by one stroke and Penn College's Eric Schall by two strokes to capture the title in his second tournament of the season. Mont Alto's Scott Levy, the previous week's winner at the Fayette Red Poling Invitational, Dan Zeiders and Ariq Mansur tied for fourth with 79s to round out the top-5 individual finishers.
Cody Ward carded a 92, his best score of the season, to help the Roaring Lions to a fourth place team finish. Tyler Broadwater and Rob Neubauer shot a 120 and 108, respectively, to round out Fayette's team scoring.
Mont Alto took 311 strokes as a team to win their second straight tournament, this time by 14 strokes over second place finisher Penn College (325). Penn State New Kensington (353), led by Cody Dinger's 85, finished third and Penn State Shenango rounded out the team competitors in fifth.
The Roaring Lions next compete in the Penn State Greater Allegheny Tournament on Wednesday, September 22 at Butler Golf Course in Elizabeth, Pa.
