Let’s meet Trey Austin…

Coach Austin comes to Penn State Fayette with elite level basketball experience, most recently serving as the assistant coach at Frostburg State University starting in 2021. Currently, Coach Austin is coaching West Virginia Gold in the Puma Pro circuit, which is a national travel organization. Coach Austin also operates Diamond State Training, which creates individualized training regimens for game like movements. Additionally, he was previously the founder and coach for the Arkansas Diamonds, which was a successful travel basketball program that ranks in the top eight for UAA.

Trey Austin is the son of Gary and Myoshi Austin. Austin earned a master’s degree in Recreation, Parks, and Sports Management from Frostburg State University and a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from University of Arkansas Little Rock. Athletically, Austin was a part of two State Championships at North Little Rock High School. He then went on to play collegiately at the NCAA Division I level at University of Arkansas Little Rock. During his collegiate career, he started as the team manager, but elevated quickly with hard work to an asset of the team. Having a team record of 30-5, the Trojans were able to elevate to the second round of March Madness after beating Purdue. Austin made his mark in the NCAA, being in top two for multiple NCAA Division I categories.

In his first year at Penn State Fayette, Coach Austin made an immediate impact both on the court and in the classroom. Under his leadership, the program produced a Player of the Year (Si Jones), along with one First Team All-Conference selection and one Second Team All-Conference honoree (Jesse Lawson Jr.). Additionally, one student-athlete earned USCAA All-American Honorable Mention recognition.
Throughout the season, Austin coached multiple nationally recognized performers, including three Players of the Weektwo Freshmen of the Week, and one National Player of the Week. The team was also recognized collectively, earning Team of the Week honors once during the season.
Academically, Coach Austin emphasized accountability and excellence, raising the team GPA from 2.3 upon arrival to a 3.2 within his first two semesters. As a result, the program earned the NABC Team Excellence Award, which honors teams with a cumulative GPA above 3.0. Additionally, three student-athletes received the NABC Honors Court Award, recognizing upperclassmen who achieved a 3.2 or higher cumulative GPA.

“We are looking for guys who live by the process. Guys who win the day. To win the day you have to go to class, be in the first couple of rows. You have to take care of your body, drink more water, get treatment, be a good teammate, cheer others on, be disciplined, and get your shots up after practice. Last, take coaching... be coachable. If you trust this process of ‘winning the days’, you will be able to impact a winning culture in a positive way.”
